DAY 5 ACROSS THE DUNES AND ALONG THE NOSSOB RIVER

S H ONE T !!!!!!
"MEMORY CARD ERROR"
Lost most of todays photos due to memory card error. I was not happy! Photos of Cheetah and large heards of Springbok.

Travelled from Twee Rivieren along the Auob river to Auchterlonie then across the dunes to Kij Kij and along the Nossob river to Nossob camp then back from the camp to Dikbaardskolk picnic spot and across the dunes to Kamqua on the Auob river and back to Twee Rivieren.

The trip took the whole day sections of the road were very corrigated and sandy which made travelling slow.

African Wild Cat
Catching some wormth in the morning sun.
Very few genetically pure populations of the African Wild Cat remain in Africa. Cross-breeding between this and domestic cats poses a serious threat to natural populations.

Nossob camp was magic and we wish we had an off-road caravan so that we could camp here. Nossob must be one of the last pristine and remote areas left on earth.

You have to get out of your car and open the gate when entering Nossob.

Tsamma Melons.
This is one of the most essential plants in the Kalahari's semi-arid ecosystem. In dry times they are the principle source of water.

Red Hartebeest
Moveing along in small heards they are predominantly grazers, often seen in riverbeds. They are fast runners and if approached by lions are able to out-run them.

At last! a lion. Just outside Nossob.

Kori Bustard
Weighing between 13.5kg and19kg, the Kori Bustard is the heaviest flying bird in the world.
We saw plenty of these.

  1. The bustard is such a funny bird - looks very much like our Australian Bustard. Annie and I saw jut the ONE as it flew up alongside the car one day! Awsome!
